Classic Hynms 2 - Dedication of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymn "Lead kindly Light" to all those affected in the Mumbai unfortunate incident on 26th Nov 08 - IMC (Indian Merchant Chamber - Mumbai) on 26th Nov, 2009

           Earlier this year on Jan 26th, just 2 months after the tragic incident at Mumbai we at "Classic Hymns" were led to dedicate a very pertinent hymn "Abide with Me" for all those affected of the happenings on 26th Nov 08. As we come close to a year after that unfortunate day at Mumbai, "Classic Hymns" are humbled to dedicate another hymn " Lead kindly Light" sung by a 300 voice choir of Chennai, as a Tribute to those affected by that fateful day. This too happens to be one among the favorite hymns of Mahatma Gandhi.

           We are sure the words of this Hymn will bless the hearts of all the members of the families who lost their loved ones, those brave hearts who fearlessly labored to save the lives of many and most of all to the authorities, officers, and staff of Mumbai Police, Mumbai Fire Department, Central Railways, Cama Hospital, Bombay Municipal Corporation, the entire team of NSG, the Naval team,- The Management and staff of The Taj Mahal Hotel ,The Oberoi, The Trident and all residents at Nariman House.

           The theme of this hymn is to spread light and hope to all those aching hearts in the midst of encircling gloom and darkness that their prayer to be lead from " from darkness to Light" with the assurance and comforting presence of the Lord Almighty. The last stanza says " And with the morn those angel faces smile, which I have loved long since, and lost a while".

Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymn "Lead kindly Light"
Lead Kindly Light
Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on;
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead Thou me on.
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.
I was not ever thus, nor pray'd that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose, and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on.
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.
So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on.
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone;
And with the morn those Angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.

- Cardinal Newman
- Mahatma Gandhi

Classic Hynms 2 - Release of Lead Kindly Light - 17th Oct, 2009
           Classic Hymn's second album titled "Lead kindly Light" was released on 17th Oct 09 in Chennai by Former Bishop of Chennai, Bishop Sundar Clarke. The first copy was received by Dr Mrs Grace George, Chairman of Alpha Group of Institutions. Releasing the album "Lead kindly Light" coincided with the festival of Light and the words of the first line of the hymn " Lead kindly Light amidst encircling gloom" was a fitting tribute to all those who pray the pray " lead me from darkness to Light".

           Mr Rajkumar Ramachandran from Delhi spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of the role of the choir in the church and community and how they can encourage all with the singing.

           The smaller groups are Mount Ensemble Male Voice, Gospel Quintet, Canticles, Michaels Children's Home, 316, Breakthrough Band NLAG and Octet Cantabile.

           As the first album "Ancient of Days" released a year ago, received encouraging response, Classic Hymns thought it appropriate that the second should be brought out and keep the enthusiasm alive. The Album has 15 hymns with some old time favourites like "Showers of blessing", "Great is thy faithfulness" sung by a Mass Choir of 300 well trained voices. 8 hymns were sung by the Mass choir and 7 hymns had a fine variation and sung as an Acappalla or set to contemporary music and were sung by the smaller groups.

          Hymns written about over 100 years ago have deep value and can speak to a person from any walk of life.

        Dedication of a hymn on October 2nd, 2009
           Dedication of one hymn on 2nd Oct to the Nation - Of the 8 Mass Choir Hymns another of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymn "Lead kindly Light" features in the album. As 2nd Oct was Gandhi Jayanthi we thought it fitting to dedicate this hymn to the Nation. By having a ragpicker from the Koduingayur area( North Chennai- India) release the CD/DVD( see pictures ), Classic Hymns shares the hope of Light to the less privileged living in gloom and darkness that they can move "from darkness to Light".

             The Lord was gracious to have us complete the first time attempt recording in 2 languages ( English & Kannada). In a way it's a record of sorts as over 30 videos were recorded in 2 days. Appreciate all choir leaders and choristers for their commitment.

        Spirit of Oneness
             The planning started in early May and the choristers from 12 Church groups coming and singing together as one was a blessing to all. It was a first time experience for most choirs and it was touching to see the Spirit of Oneness. Many new talents were spotted Glad that the choir leaders were leading from front and the commitment of choristers was very encouraging.

         Our God Reigns
             Last Oct (2021 ) received an email from Lenny Smith of popular " Our God Reigns" He has been watching Classic Hymns You Tube Channel and requested if the Classic Hymns Mass Choir would sing this hymn. Assured him that it will be an honour and will do when a Mass Choir assembles next. Augustine Paul wrote the music with harmony , one for the choirs , the Piano and for strings. The 225 voice Mass Choir singing sounded very annointed .
        125 Voice Kannada Mass Choir
             5 choir groups were part of the 125 voice Mass Choir in Kannada (including a chorister group from Udupi). Among the hymns is "Lead Kindly Light" ( in Kannada ) a favourite of Mahatma Gandhi
